Small Steps To Living A More Sustainable Life

Your home is your castle, but have you ever considered what is powering it? Green energy is a great solution that you can implement in your own home, in order to clean up the environment and lower your bills. Read on for some simple strategies that you can start using right now.

Turn off the kitchen, bathroom, and any other exhaust fans as soon as you no longer need them. Some people leave the fans on for 20 minutes or so, but it is better to leave them on for no longer than five minutes after showering, bathing, or cooking is finished.

Putting in solar panels in your home for solar energy is easy. However, before installing them, there are some things to keep in mind. The major thing you have to consider before going ahead with solar panels is the amount of sunlight your home gets over the course of a day. Shade is valuable in some respects, but when you are considering solar energy it can be a complicating factor.

Swap your old incandescent light bulbs for high-efficiency LED or compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs use far less electricity than incandescent, and they come in sizes that fit most existing fixtures. While the up-front cost is generally higher, most of these bulbs will last for years before burning out.

Turn off appliances you aren't using. Upon leaving a particular room, remember to turn of the lights, television, computer or even the entertainment center. A power strip offers a handy way to shut down multiple devices at once, and it prevents passive electrical use due to standby modes.

Buy a box of Ziplock quart size baggies and use these to make your own snacks. Whether you enjoy a bit of trail mix, Chex Mix, or a tasty muffin, you can use this bag and wash it when you get home to use the next day. Keep your snacks green by washing and reusing these baggies for your snacks until they are too worn.

Solar Design

Think outside of the box. While many people think 'solar' panels when they think of permanent culture, there are other ways to take advantage of the sun. If you are building a new home, consider incorporating passive solar design into the home. By building with materials such as concrete or adobe and taking advantage of the sun's natural heat with south-facing windows, you can create a home that will naturally heat itself in the winter and stay cool in the summer.

Renewable Energy

To help you use more financial permaculture in your day to day life, contact your current energy or electricity provider to see if they offer a renewable-energy alternative. Many energy companies are beginning to offer environmentally sound, even higher priced energy services to cater to more socially conscious individuals.

A clean environment is key to ensuring that we continue to have the food and water that we need to survive. It's up to each individual to play their part and a great start to that part is to use the ideas in this article to "green" your energy use. Start implementing what you've learned and reap the rewards!
